The importance of flouride and random dental care.

First, this is a blog, I am not a medical doctor nor a dentist. Nevertheless, I tend to back up my claims with science as to avoid quackery. Please use science to verify any and all claims I make. I will try my best, yet as a human I am fallible.

First, I will state that the poisonmongers did scare me. I fell for quackery in the past. Here is an article from quackwatch.org that explains how poisonmongers work.

" Although fluoridation is safe and effective in preventing tooth decay, the scare tactics of misguided poisonmongers have deprived many communities of its benefits."[0]

Here is rationalwiki's take on water fluoridation.

"
Since its inception in the 1940s, the scientifically sound concept of fluoridating water has been a source of fear and suspicion in the minds of conspiracy theorists.
Fluoride works by converting the outer layer of tooth enamel made of hydroxylapatite, Ca5(PO4)3OH, to fluoroapatite, Ca5(PO4)3F. The latter chemical is less soluble in acidic solutions. The three most commonly added fluoride chemicals are sodium fluoride (NaF), fluorosilicic acid ((H3O)2SiF6), and sodium fluorosilicate (Na2[SiF6]).[2] Fluorosilicic acid is a byproduct of phosphate fertilizer manufacture, a fact which fluoride opponents repeat ad absurdum in an attempt to scare you.[3]
In short: The issue has been extensively studied since the 40's. As a result, every reputable public health organization endorses the benefits of fluoridation. To date, no such organizations have endorsed claims that fluoride is a secret communist mind-control plot -- though we wait with bated breath." [1]

Here's how stuffworks on fluoride toothepaste.

"Something that has gotten a little less negative attention is the addition of fluoride to your toothpaste. While hard line anti-fluoride consumers avoid fluoride-enriched toothpaste, most people use it because it's been shown to help prevent cavities." [2]

The main concern with fluoride is children swallowing toothpaste. Therefore, unless you have a bad habit of swallowing toothpaste or are a children under six years old fluoride toothpaste is beneficial to health.

I tend to stick to ADA accepted products, American Dentist Association products as an extra line of defense. Personally I recommend a pre-brushing rinse with warm water to clean out any food particles, you don't want them ground in. A pre-rinse also helps neutralize or wash out any acids which make your teeth more vulnerable to abrasions from brushing.

Next, I use a gum stimulator and floss to get out as many particles and plaque as I can takes about five minutes. A waterpik is another way to get rid of plaque, but you still need conventional floss to sometimes reach deeply embedded food.

Use an ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste, unless a child under six. Brush softly focusing on your gum line. Remember to get the back of the teeth as well as the front and tops of your teeth. I brush for two minutes and divide into 12 ten second sessions plus a few for my inside cheeks. I don't brush my tongue, I can't stand it.

10 seconds upper left quadrant back of teeth, 10 seconds top of teeth upper left area, 10 seconds front of teeth upper left section, repeat for remaining quadrants. Next, I use an antiseptic rinse. Listerine or a generic cheaper alternative, make sure it is ADA accepted for thirty seconds.

Finally, I use an ADA accepted ACT fluoride rinse for two minutes due to no fluoride in drinking water. I think the last part you can skip if you have fluoride water. One final note, be sure to rinse with water or use a dental mint or waterpik after eating sugary treats.

Twice a day for brushing works. Takes about ten minutes a day each, twenty minutes total. If you have mild gum disease you may need additional antiseptic rinses to help keep the pathogens down. This works well enough for me and follows mainstream science to the best of my knowledge.
